Question:

Solar powered cooking device?

Okay, I know this may seem strange but what can I use to make my own solar powered cooking device? What I mean basically is what do I use to absorb heat and make it stay inside the device so the temperature inside will rise? There is no way I am buying one, no matter what the price. I made this one of my goals and I'm just having trouble with the whole conducting and insulating thing. Thanks in advance.

  1. Don't thank me. I'm only typing this for the points.

  2. You can make a solar oven out of cardboard boxes. A TV box, paint inside black, put inside another box. Stuff betwenn boxes with cardboard. Get piece of glass big enough to sit on top. Make collectors by putting tinfoil on cardboard and attach to top so it sticks out all around on all 4 sides. We use them all the time. Hope this helps

  3. Looking at this:

    http://scientificsonline.com/product.asp...

I would surmise you could copy the design by using large sheets of aluminum foil in a parabolic design to reflect sunlight to a common target in the middle.  On that target, you'd want to mount a black metal pan to absorb the heat/light better.  If you have continuous sunlight and thus a continuous source of heat, then you won't need to worry about heat conduction.

So just check the link and try making something like that.  Pretty sure someone I know actually did that in school.

  4. Building a solar cooker is pretty easy and simple (needs some work with tools though). Iam giving a link below it explains building of solar cookers as well as ovens.

Normally the internals are insulated with the top lid of glass to allow light inside and trap heat.

The inner side is coated with black paint and so do the cooking utensils and the lids to absorb maximum light energy.

    Have fun and good luck.
