The Koln manager expressed his frustration on the disappointing 4-1 home loss at the hands of Schalke last week.
FC Koln were downed by Huub Stevens’ Schalke in last week’s clash at the RheinEnergieStadion. The home side took the brighter start to the game when http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukas-Podolski-c22896 scored in the fourth minute to give Koln the lead. It was an impressive
first-half performance by the home side but the visitors came back with vengeance after the interval.
Schalke scored four in 22 minutes to take all three points from the match and leave the home fans in despair. It was the Billy Goats’ 10th league loss of the current season.
Stale Solbakken claimed that his side failed to capitalize on the early lead and missed some great chances to go further ahead. He admitted that Miso Brecko’s sending off in the second-half was the turning point of the match as
the defence failed to handle Schalke strikers.
“We were marginally the better team for the first hour. We should have capitalised on that by adding to Lukas Podolski's opener. Schalke's two goals took the wind out of our sails and after Miso Brecko was sent off we faced an
uphill struggle,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The former FC Copenhagen boss added that it was a poor performance from his side and has called for improvement for the upcoming matches in the league. The manager showered praise on the visiting side and admitted that Schalke
are genuine contenders for the Bundesliga title this season.
“In the end we were unable to take anything from the game against a very effective Schalke team. We need to take a good look at the league table and keep working hard. The next few games are very important for us,” he concluded.
FC Koln will next face FC Kaiserslautern in an away game on Sunday, February 5. The team will be desperate for a win as they are only three points from the relegation play-off spot. The Billy Goats currently sit in 14th
spot with 21 points from the 19 games played this far.
