Question:

Sold my motorbike 10 years ago. Just got a SORN fine! - some advice please?

I sold my bike, sent off the relevant paperwork and moved house within a week.

10 years later, I suddenly have received a letter from a debt company (Inter-credit) asking for a fine to be paid (in the usual manner they don't bother mentioning how much it is or make it clear as to what it's for!).

I received a letter a month ago from the DVLA (which I didn't keep!) stating that someone is trying to register the bike for road tax - funnily enought the DVLA can't find a notice of this - (what a suprise).

Surely after 10 years I can't be held responsible for something like this???

  1. You need proof that you sold the bike and it was notarized to prove the title changed hands.

You need to contact a lawyer to be sure someone did not try and keep the bike out of their name.

  2. Do you have any proof that you sold the bike?

  3. You are OK.  The key thing is that you say that you "sent off the relevant paperwork".  Which means that you sent the old Vehicle Registration to the Dept of Motor Vehicles.  That is all you have to do.  Otherwise you would be at the mercy of someone who has physical possession of your motorcycle but didn't bother to register it himself.

I think i would go , in person, to a DVLA office and wait in line to prove that you have done all you can to "fix" this issue.  If you don't owe the fine, you don't owe the fine.

Unless it is your fine.  Is that possible?  If so, you owe it and that wasn't erased when you sold it.  I don't think this is true or you would have told us that it was yours.

    Good luck.
