  1. get the kind were u press the botton its a lot safer

  2. Clean the heck out of the metal to be joined.

    Flux it well.

Get it hot enough before applying the solder.

  3. Are you talking soldering with a torch (as in plumbing) or a hot tip?  Cleaning is always imperative with either.

  4. Don't touch the soldering end.  Other than that it's not that hard.

  5. clean both pieces that will be soldered with a wire brush to remove surface impurities.

brush flux on both pieces, you dont need a really heavy coat.

with the iron hot place the pieces in their final position and lay the tip of the soldering iron on top for a second.

lay the solder on the tip. if it melts immediately then GENTLY push the end of the solder into the tip and let it flow down and around the pieces. you want a nice dome of solder covering and filling in the gaps.

keep in mind that this is a procedure for soldering things like two wires in a radio back together. sweat soldering piping is a whole different procedure.

  6. Make sure you heat the junction well and let the solder flow into the spot.  Don/t just touch the solder to the hot tip of the soldering gun/iron/pencil.  "Cold" solder joints are one of the biggest problems in electronics malfunctions (or of leaks in copper plumbing).  Make sure you have good mechanical connection, also, and don't depend on the solder to hold things together.

  7. hold the soldering iron where you wish to join the component legs to the board and then feed the solder in. this way you can be more accurate and control the amount of solder you use - as apposed to holding the solder in place then adding the iron second this will just get messy.

keep a small piece of damp sponge near by to wipe the end of the iron on to prevent solder building up on the tip

don't hold the iron onto the board for too long as it can burn the tracks.

n just be careful where you hold the pieces, you can burn your fingers and drop your board, i use sticky tape on the non soldering section to hold the components in place - nice and clean
