Sole Power eying first victory over six furlongs – Horseracing news
Sole Power will be chasing his first ever victory over six furlongs in the Darley July Cup (British Champions Series And Global Sprint Challenge) at Newmarket.
According to his trainer Edward Lynam, “Sole Power has never won over six furlongs, all seven of his wins have been over five, and to be honest he's never looked like he'd get the trip. The hope we're clinging onto is that he has settled better this year
than any other year so it looks his best chance of staying.”
Stamina has always been the problem for the six-year-old gelding, who took everyone by surprise in a race at the Royal Ascot, winning the race by a neck distance against race favourite Shea Shea. He has an extremely good speed, which helps him deliver solid
results over shorter distances. However, things are different when it comes to some longer distance competitions.
Although six furlongs is not much, yet Sole Power does not find it easy to deliver the goods at that level. He has improved his performances to some extent this year, thus his camp has been encouraged to test him at Newmarket.
Overall, the seasoned runner has participated in a total of 33 races, winning just seven of them. He has been highly inconsistent throughout his career, which is why his strike rate is on the lower side. However, he has finally raised his game and is having
a wonderful time at the moment. If he continues delivering solid results, he will definitely end up having the best season of his career.
Sole Power’s stable mate Slade Power will also be taking part in the July Cup. He is a quality performer and has got a better strike rate than some of the other runners in his stable.
According to Lynam, “I was delighted with Slade Power at the Curragh. He has a tremendous cruising speed and he's learning all the time.”
The four-year-old colt has taken part in 10 races, winning five of them. He proved to be a major disappointment at the Royal Ascot, but will definitely come back strongly next year, when he will be in much better shape.
