Sole Power taken out from the Nunthorpe Stakes due to ground concerns by trainer Edward Lynam
The 4-year-old Edward Lynam trained Sole Power has been scratched from the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes held at York on 19 August, 2011, due to ground conditions.
Before the ground was labeled as good to soft, Edward Lynam said that his 4-year-old gelding’s inclusion in the race is not permanent.
Since the ground has gone good to soft, in patches, for the feature race at York, it will be a straight up skip for Sole Power, as his connections assessed that the track will not be quick enough for the star sprinter.
This year, Sole Power’s only win came in the Group 2 BETFRED.COM Temple Stakes at Haydock on 21 May, 2011. The five furlong dash reeled in 12 runners and the going was good to firm.
Under jockey K Latham, Sole Power broke from the gates in fine fashion and decided to take on his competition from the outset, but got held up in the mid division.
The pair made headway and started switching positions and edged to the right side of the track with approximately 2 furlongs to go. The pace produced by the star sprinter was an amazing one and he topped the lot from mid division in a matter of 1 furlong.
With a furlong remaining, Sole Power assumed the leader’s position and held on well till the end to win the first prize money.
Sole Power has had seventeen life time starts with four wins, a single runner up finish and the gelding finished third, thrice in his career, with career earnings of £248,792.
One year back, Sole Power, sent off as 100 to 1, pulled off a stunner and demanded respect ever since his long shot winner, and this time around the gelding was 7 to 1 favourite to win the 5 furlong contest, twice behind the favourite sprinter, Hoof It.
Paddy Power, son of owner Sabena, said, "He's definitely not running. It's a shame, but the one upside is we're already at York and can enjoy a day at the races without the pressure of a Group 1 runner".
