Solheim Cup European Team announced – Golf news
The ladies European captain for the Solheim Cup team has finally unfurled the team members for this year’s showdown scheduled in September, at Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland. Captain, Alison Nicholas announced the team members at a ceremony held
in Dublin, Ireland, picking up no fewer than four players for the team apart from the already selected members through the Hendersons Money List format.
Nicholas, who also captained the European side in 2009 at Rich Harvest Farms in America, said, “I am confident in my team and I believe that we will do very well at Killeen Castle. These players represent the best of European women’s golf and we look forward
to putting on a magnificent show for the fans.”
Nicholas’s selection of Swede rookie, Caroline Hedwall made headlines in the ceremony as many have touted her as currently the best player on the whole circuit. The 22-year-old has won twice on the tour in her rookie year and has posted several strong finishes
in the current season. She is also likely to pull in a ‘Grand Double’ for the year with her chances of getting nominated for both ‘Player of the Year’ as well as the ‘Rookie of the Year’ accolades.
Rest of the three players who qualified to be good enough for Nicholas included Spain’s Azahara Muñoz, England’s Karen Stupples and Sandra Gal of Germany, all of whom have posted impressive performances on the tour this year.
Rest of the 12-member team includes England’s Melissa Reid and Laura Davies, Norway’s Suzann Pettersen, Christel Boeljon from Netherlands, two assistant captains in Joanne Morley and Annika Sorenstam, Sweden’s Maria Hjorth and Anna Nordqvist, Scotland’s
Catriona Matthew, and another Swede, Sophie Gustafson.
Assistant captains, Morley and Sorenstam are two of the most established players on the tour and come in with tons of experience of the sport. Playing on a familiar turf in Killeen, these veteran players will pose a serious threat to the American team which
constitutes much of young players from Korea and elsewhere.
The American team was announced last week by captain, Rosie Jones. The American team has won eight of the 11 events in the history of the Solheim Cup, and has also won the last three consecutive events. European team, on the other hand, has won three events
since the inaugural event was first played in 1990. They won the last event in 2003, at Barsebäck Golf and Country Club in Sweden.
