Solid performance earns Cory Lopez a comprehensive victory in Round 4 of Nike Lowers Pro
America’s Cory Lopez was successful in advancing into the fifth round (Round of 24) of Nike Lowers Pro, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event, after putting on an exquisite performance to claim top honours in the sixth heat of Round 4
(Round of 48) that went down at the beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday, May 2.
His fellow countryperson Tanner Gudauskas made the Round 5 after managing to finish just behind Lopez in runner-up place.
The surfing fans had high hopes of the latest ASP PRIME event owing to the fact that a large field of international surfers had joined the local talent in the line-up to try and get their hands on the prestigious event title, ASP ranking points and a share
of the huge prize purse that was on offer. The waves of Lower Trestles were also renowned for offering a wonderful experience, which was enough to convince a number of the current ASP World Tour contenders to take some time out to warm up before the third
stop on the ASP elite tour that kicks off in Brazil next week.
The sixth heat of Round 4 saw Lopez squaring off with his compatriot Gudauskas, Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn and Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro.
Adjust exceptionally well to the clean two-to-four foot waves that were gracing the beach during the late afternoon session, Lopez put on a remarkable show for the local crowd. Locking his first business wave in the opening minutes of the heat, the American
surfer pulled off a flurry of powerful carves to post an 8.77 on the score-board. After a long determined hunt, he managed to find a 6.87-point ride in the dying minutes of the four-man battle to finish with a decisive heat-total of 15.64 points.
Gudauskas successfully extended his life in the event as well after putting on a pretty impressive performance for a heat-total of 12.87 points, which included a 7.00 and 5.87-point wave.
Coleborn finished third with a heat-total of 10.67 points, while Monteiro surprisingly finished in fourth place with a pretty unexpected heat-total of 6.93 points. Both Coleborn and Monteiro got eliminated from the competition.
