  1. The best thing is to have him shaved.  You can try bringing him to a groomer - but if he's really crabby, the best thing is to call your vet clinic and they can sedate and shave him.

Matts can be terribly painful and can cause large wounds under them.   Sometimes just having the cat shaved once or twice a year makes life MUCH better for you and the cat.

  2. If it is matted to the point where the mats are down to the skin then you may need to take him to a professional groomer.  A groomer has the right tools to de-mat the Cat , Shave him if necessary and clean him up so that his hair will grow in right .  Also with a long haired cat you will need to keep him groomed "Daily" by brushing him and cleaning him.  Long haired cats take a lot of work. And if you aren't prepared or able to give him the time he will need, you may want to consider letting someone else take care of him.

I'm not saying this to be mean or judgemental.  So please don't take it wrong.  But any animal with a long coat takes a lot of care.

I have a Chow/Husky Mix who weighs well over 100 pounds and I have to brush him every other day.  And each time I do, I get atleast a plastic grocery bag full of hair off of him!  Alot of work but I knew that when we got him.

Good Luck and please don't try to remove the mats yourself, you could end up hurting him.
