  1. a) 2x- 3y = 12

       adding 3y to each side, and subtracting 12 from each side...

       3y= 2x- 12

      now divide by 3...

    y= (2/3)x - 4

    b) 5x+ 2y= 7

    subtract 5x from each side...

    2y= 7- 5x

    now divide by 2 to get y by itself....

    y= (7/2) - (5/2) x

    done!

  2. Solving for y in terms of x means that you want y seperated from everything else, but you can still use x's in your answer.

    For problem a just subtract 2x from both sides to get -3y=12-2x. Next you want to divide by -3 on both sides to get y by itself. This gives you y=(12-2x)/-3. This is your answer.

    For b, do the same. Subtract 5x from both sides to get 2y=7-5x. Next divide by 2 on both sides. Your answer is y=(7-5x)/2.

    Hope this helps!
