solve for x. (6x-40)=(3x+5)

Be sure to show your work, so I can understand what you mean.

I'm home schooled and don't have any help.

Also one more problem....I'm going to try to explain this figure in my best ability- There is a figure that looks an "X" and are adjacent and they all share the same vertex angle 1 is (3x)degrees, angle 2 is "y", and angle 3 is 75degrees. There is nothing between angle 4. And that's it.

The questions is solve for y.

I really hope that makes sense AND you can HELP!

  1. I didn't get the second part so I can't help with that...

    Here's the solution for the first question :-

    6x - 40 = 3x + 5

    6x - 3x = 40 + 5

    3x = 45

    x = 45/3

    x = 15

    Hope that was easy to understand...^_^

  2. Problem #1: (6x - 40) = (3x + 5)

    Step 1: Place like terms on the same side of the equation. Careful with the signs!

    6x - 40 = 3x + 5

    6x - 3x = 5 + 40

    Step 2: Simplify like terms

    6x - 3x = 5 + 40

    3x = 45

    Step 3: Solve for "x".

    3x = 45

    x = 45 ÷ 3

    x = 15 (<==ANSWER!!)

    Problem #2: Solve for "y".

    I need to know where the angles are placed. For example, how are you numbering the angles? Starting from the top and then clockwise?

    In any case, you should know that any two angles on a straight line are equal to 180º and that angles that are opposite to each other are equal.

    EDIT:

    Then the calculations below are correct!

    The angle "y" is between the angle "3x" and the angle "75º". This means that the angle "y" and the angle "75º" are on the same line, therefore the sum of both angles should be equal to 180º. Therefore:

    75º + yº = 180º

    yº = 180º - 75º

    yº = 105º (<==ANSWER!!)

    If you needed to solve for "x":

    Since the angle "3x" and the angle "y" are on the same line, then the sum of both angles should equal 180º. So,

    3xº + yº = 180º

    Since we already know what "y" is, we substitute:

    3xº + 105º = 180º

    3xº = 180º - 105º

    3xº = 75º

    xº = 75º ÷ 3

    xº = 25º (<==ANSWER!!)

    Hope I helped!

  3. 6x-40=3x+5

    6x-3x-40=5

    3x=5+40

    3x=45

    x=45/3

    x=15
