  1. 1st problem:

    √(x - 1) = 7

    x - 1 = 49

    x = 50

    Answer: x = 50

    Proof:

    √(50 - 1) = 7

    √49 = 7

    7 = 7

    2nd problem:

    √(2x + 16) = 5

    2x + 16 = 25

    2x = 9

    x = 4.5

    Answer: x = 4.5

    Proof:

    √(2[4.5] + 16) = 5

    √(9 + 16) = 5

    √25 = 5

    5 = 5
