  1. Using substitution...

    7x - 5y = 14

    -4x + y = 27 --> y = 27 + 4x

    Sub the 2nd equation into the 1st equation

    7x - 5y = 14

    7x - 5(27+4x) = 14

    7x - 135 - 20x = 14

    -13x = 149

    x = -149/13

    Sub this value of x into either equation and solve for y.
