Solving absolute value equations. plz help?!?!?

A machine is used to fill several bags with 16 oz. of sugar. after the bags are filled, another machine weighs them. if the bag weighs .3 oz. more or less than the desired weight, the bag is rejected. wright an equation to find the heaviest and lightest bag the machine will approve.

  1. x - 3 < x < x+3

    question is badly phrased though, as there's no absolute lowest or highest weight that will be approved by the machine, as- according to the question- the bag will be rejected when it weighs 13 or 19 oz. So the two limits -upper and lower- are 19 and 13 oz.

    The question could be better phrased :

    "if the bag weighs MORE THAN .3 oz. more or less than the desired weight, the bag is rejected"

    Whoops, didn't see the decimal point. So it's 16.3 and 15.7


  2. k i'm not sure but i think...

    you have to have enough room to have .3 more and .3 less than desired amount.

    16=x-3/10 and 16=x+3/10
