Somali Lemonade and Dayatthespa to head the Appalachian Stakes
The Grade 3, $100,000 Appalachian Stakes are set to go underway on 19 April, 2012, over at Keeneland’s turf course, and the one mile long race has reeled in 9, 3-year-old fillies, and the Caroline Forgason’s Somali Lemonade and Chad C. Brown trained Dayatthespa
will head the Appalachian.
Michael Matz trained Kentucky bred 3-year-old filly, won the Grade 3 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine over Keeneland’s turf course last fall, has been declared as the favourite to do it again this year as well, and Dayatthespa with her undefeated run this season
has run the fillies and mares ragged over the Gulfstream Park’s turf course.
Jerry Frankel, Ronald Frankel, Steve Laymon and Bradley Thoroughbreds’ Dayatthespa, kicked off her 2012 campaign at Gulfstream Park with a run in the one mile long Sweetest Chant Stakes on 22 January, 2012.
Over the turf course, Dayatthespa downed Wholelottashakin in second and Frolic’s Revenge in third with the winning time of 1 minute and 34.43 seconds.
Three starts she had as a juvenile, Dayatthespa was ridden by Ramon Dominguez, but with the turn of the New Year Javier Castellano got the mount, and in their second start together in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes also at Gulfstream Park won their
second in as many starts for the season.
The New York bred daughter of City Zip, out of mare M’Lady Doc by Doc’s Leader, Dayatthespa stretched in distance from 1 mile to 1 1/8 miles, downed the field with the winning time of 1 minute and 47.30 seconds.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, out of mare Chic Corine by Nureyev, Somali Lemonade will be maker her seasonal debut in the Appalachian Stakes.
She is exiting a sixth place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last fall at Churchill Downs to winner Stephanie’s Kitten, who downed the 1 mile distance in 1 minute and 38.80 seconds.
Both of the favoured fillies have been assigned top weight of 123 pounds, as Somali Lemonade will break from post number 4 under her regular rider Alex Solis, while Dayatthespa drew the rail retaining Javier Castellano.
