  1. Somber means either sad or glum, melancholy or "blue" if you will (you can look it up).  I would draw a sad little room all grey with an unmade bed and drawn blinds.  Like a room that might smell cuz the windows have been closed forever and the person is messy.  Bonus points if you can make this a pencil (just lead pencil) sketch with heavy shading.

    Good look!

  2. As laura104 mentioned, somber, in the literal sense, means dark and gloomy. Think bleak, depressing, gray, dingy, and dismal.

But in a broader definition, applied to room decoration, it could be thought of as sparse, restrained to the point of severity. Nothing superfluous.

I'm not exactly sure what you need for your project, but maybe combining elements of both definitions would help create the desired image. Choose objects that will convey the mood.

For example: Picture a table lamp, too small for the room size, so there's not enough light to illuminate the room, so the room has lots of shadows.  Utilitarian furnishings, like bland office clocks, straight-back chairs, crooked tables, and almost bare walls. Keep everything simple in line, rather than plush and beautiful.
