Somdev Devvarman looks to break into top 50 players of the world in 2012 – Tennis News
Indian tennis ace, Somdev Devvarman has made it clear for himself that he needs a top 50 spot in the world rankings and he will be battling it out on the court to prove that he is worthy of his confession. The Indian thinks he deserves a top-50 player in
the world and he will shut his critics with his performances at the court.
He is currently ranked at 84 in the ATP world rankings and will have to work extremely hard, might have to win every match of his professional tennis circuit in order to break into top 50 by the midst of 2012. It will never be an easy campaign as everyone
is looking to improve their ranking by flabbergasting their complacent superior ranked rivals at the court and clinching some crucial points with those triumphs.
After a tipsy turvy season last year, he was curious to have a strong footing at the start of the season to register a promising beginning. Indian professional started the year 2011 ranked at 102 and cruised past his superior ranked players to register a
career high ranking of 62 but couldn’t keep the momentum and dropped to world number 84 by the end of the season. If he manages to keep the momentum next year, he might fulfil his dream to break in top 50’s and play his dream event in London, Olympics 2012.
Devvarman had set his sights to make it to the Olympics 2012 in London. Stating about this campaign, he said, “The focus is definitely on the Olympics, I'll just work at improving my game further, and breaking into the top-50 would be nice.” Talking about
his New Year start-up tournament Chennai Open, he stated, “Well, I certainly hope to do well and go one better than 2009. I love playing in Chennai. The atmosphere is great, the crowd supportive. This year it's a very strong field and at this level it's rare
to get easy wins.”
Devvarman was to start off his 2012 ATP (Association of Tennis Association) season at the Aircel Chennai Open but was sidelined from the field due to injury just days before the competition got underway. The Indian tennis ace will now make his season debut
at the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open, in Melbourne later this month but his physical fitness still remains a question to be answered.
