Somdev Devvarman says he has regained full fitness – Tennis News
Indian tennis star, Somdev Devvarman, has once again assured that he is fit again and ready to take part in the London Olympics.
Being the only Indian star in the singles category, Devvarman received a wild card entry for the tennis event at the London Olympics despite his ranking getting dropped out of top 400.
Tennis followers in India were worried if Devvarman has been able to achieve 100 percent fitness or not, as he has not taken part in any tennis tournament since announcing that he has got rid of his the shoulder injury that he
incurred last year.
Devvarman achieved his highest ranking of 62 in July 2011. At a time when he was going towards the peak of his career, the Indian star suffered a severe shoulder injury. He has not played even a single tour level match in this
season, being in-active since last year’s November. The Indian player had an operation on his shoulder at the end of last year and he was advised to stay away from playing tennis for at least eight months.
The last tournament in which he participated was a challenger event in Charlottesville, where he retired from his second round match against Denis Kudla with the same shoulder injury.
Devvarman added, "This is the first time in my career that I had such an injury. My shoulder used to hurt but I overlooked it and then it became quiet bad. So I had surgery in November and now I am fully fit.”
He went on to say, "But I suppose this happens with every player. Tennis has become a very demanding sport and it impacts you body. But you have to live with it."
Many top players’ career got affected by niggling injuries they suffered. Marat Safin, Lleyton Hewitt, Tommy Haas, Juan Carlos Ferrero and many others would have achieved way more had they not come across different sports injuries.
The latest victim of this problem is Rafael Nadal, who had to withdraw from London Olympics due to a knee injury. Nadal was announced to be Spain’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony but he would not be able have this honour now.
