Somdev Devvarman thrashes Greg Jones in 1st round – Charlottesville Challenger 2011
Top seeded Indian Somdev Devvarman wiped out Australian Greg Jones in the first round of the Charlottesville Challenger 2011.
Devvarman vaporized Jones in straight two sets of 7-5, 6-3 on indoor hard courts of the Boar’s Head Sports Club after the players had battled it out for one hour and thirty three minutes on Tuesday the 1st of November 2011.
The players were meeting for the first time and opting to serve first was Jones and both the players successfully held their serves to place themselves at 1-1 on the scoreboard. In the third game Devvarman capitalised on a breakpoint and then held his serve to take the lead at 3-1 on the scoreboard. However, Jones was quick to reduce the deficit by holding is serve immediately in the next game and then in the sixth game by breaking back; he completely closed in on the lead at 3-3.
In subsequent four games the players bagged two service games each and once more the score tied at 4-4 and then 5-5 in the tenth game. However in the second last game Jones double faulted on his serve and endorsed a crucial breakpoint to the top seed. Serving for the set was Devvarman and he smashed a crosscourt shot to go one up in the match.
Commencing the second set of the match was once again Jones and the two expertly handled their service games to tie the score at 1-1. However, in the third game Jones double faulted on his serve and endorsed a break to his adversary. On the other hand, Devvarman had bagged two games by the end of the fourth game and the score had shifted to 3-1.
In the following four games the players bagged two games each on their respective serves and by the eighth game the score had progressed to 5-3 with Devverman leading the match. The serve switched and Jones forehand shot went wayward, presenting the set and the match to the top seed.
Overall in the match, although both had smashed four aces, Devvarman had fewer double faults than his opponent. He had also targeted 67 percent of his first serves and accomplished a 72 percent win of his first service points. Devvarman had a strong defence and he not only saved three of four breakpoints on his serve but also managed to capitalize on four out of eight breakpoints won.
The top seed managed to reserve a spot in the second round of the match where he will be facing American wildcard entrant Denis Kudla.
