Hi, This will be my first time living in a Muslim country during Ramadan and I was wondering if someone could give me some details about what goes on during Ramadan with regards opening hours, Alcohol Sales and so on.

I have read up on it and understand the religious aspect and just want to make sure I don't do anything that will offend anyone taking part in it.

Thanks !

  1. Ok. About RAMADAN in Bahrain.

Work hours change. They’re less. Start later in the morning (most companies) and end earlier in the afternoon. There is not fixed timing, you would have to ask the place you work at for exact details. I believe governmental ministries and offices work from 8 to 1 or 1.30. I’m not pretty sure though.

Never ever (I really mean NEVER) eat in public during the holy month of Ramadan. Of course, we mean you cannot eat, drink, chew gum, during the fasting hours (sunrise to sunset). This is against the law, and you could be caught for doing this.

You can however lock yourself in a private place and have your breakfast, lunch, drink water, etc - people would understand if they figured out

During night (or actually after sunset): life goes back to normal. Everything becomes much livelier then other days of the year. People meet, eat, celebrate (religious or totally non religious parties) and so on. So after sunset, life is active and pretty much everything is alright.

Alcohol after sunset can be served or consumed according to the laws/rules of the normal days (other days of the year). Which is basically, drinking it or buying it from authorized places (hotels/authorized restaurants) – and of course, not drinking it in public places like the street.

Remember, at the end of Ramadan the country celebrates ‘Eid’ so we all get three days holiday ;)

If you have anything other inquires, do not hesitate and ask.

  2. You dont get alcohol during this period and are not supposed to eat and drink (even water) openly in the public. In the evening except for alcohol everything is allowed.

You are allowed to eat and drink in the office behind closed doors in the kitchen or pantry.
