What are some of the better known, well trusted brands for External Hard-Drives (The USB plug in ones).

And, What should one look for in a basic sort of lap top for everyday use, not gaming or anything high tech like that, eg - how much RAM, etc etc???

Thanks

  1. id say a good external hard drive is a passport usb one loads of memory there a 1gb ram should be good

    good luck

  2. Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital

For Laptops, you can go for the Asus EEE PC 1000H, Acer Aspire One MSI Wind. They are pretty inexpensive and are sufficient for simple tasks plus they are very lightweight.

  3. Hi,

For USB external hard drives go with: SanDisk, Transcend, Seagate, Western Digital

The following would constitute specs for a good, economical laptop for general computing:

    1. Hard Disk - 80 GB Plus

    2. RAM - Min 1 GB, 2GB preferable

    3. Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo

    4. Atleast 3 USB drives.

Make sure you have wi-fi, make sure windows comes in pre-installed, make sure the laptop is light and portable.

    Thats about it really!

  4. Western digital is fantastic. Seagate is so-so.

  5. my fav external hard drives are made by western digital.

a laptop running vista should have 2gb of ram and at leats a 2.0ghz core 2 duo.  you could get away with integrated graphics if you dont plan on any gaming but if you want to watch movies i would recommend getting a dedicated video card.  i have a dell xps m1330 and i love it!!  of course any mac is good for everyday use too

  6. i agree with what richard posted, i would recommend the same. and for ram, most computers i see use at least 2gb of ram. before i used 4gb, now 3gb, but didn't really notice much of a difference so i gave 1gb to my brother.

Will give you a list of the top 10 external hard drives.

Also, since you're not looking for anything high-tech or being used for gaming - you can't go wrong with 1GB RAM. Just look for laptops that don't have 'GAME. GAME. GAME' all over it.

  8. Looks like plenty of others have answered your question about External HDD.

Coming to laptops, specification does not always mean a good laptop.

Many laptops with high system specs. can hang several times and even crash.

For basic everyday use go for a Dell XPS M1330 or any one of the Lenovo R-series ThinkPad. These are the best.

Just see if it comes WITHOUT Windows Vista. Then U can separately install Windows XP and use it. If at all U cant find one without Vista, then you gotta change over to XP yourself.

Dont worry, about the specs. You wont be able to use 100% even of the minimum specs. of these.

I dont know about others, but I am pretty Brand Specific.
