Some Stats from the first three Premier League games of the season
The Premier league season is still in its infancy but there are some stats that are worth taking a note.
Here is a list of all such stats:
Manchester and their Crossing:
City have played 3 games so far and have attempted 35 crosses from open play, but surprisingly only one of those 35 has hit the intended target. Having over 70 million pounds worth of wingers such as Silva, Milner, Adam Johnson, and Shaun Wright Philips one would at least expect more than one from 35 crosses to hit the target.
Newcastle and shots on target against them:
The Geordies’ defense have never been their forte, in fact it has been the joke of the comedians in recent times but it seems like times are changing as Chirs Hughton’s men have only allowed 6 shots on target. That’s the same number of shots as against Arsenal and Steve Harper is unlucky to have conceded 4 goals from just 6 shots.
West Ham – the Sharp shooters:
West Ham may be the bottom of the league table after three games after only scoring once so far this season, but it may be baffling knowledge that only Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham have had more shots on goal than the hammers. Carlton cole and Pablo Berrera have shot 11 times between them and have not scored a single goal.
John Obi Mikel – the midfield Maestro:
Paul Scholes is the midfield maestro of the season so far is as boring a stat as any. But the man with the 2nd best pass success rate is John Obi Mikel of Chelsea. The Nigerian has attempted 259 passes in three games and 234 of them has been successful. That’s only 25 passes going awry in three games, 8 per game, not a bad ratio at all.
Manchester United are the cleanest Players:
Fulham and West Ham are not the most malicious tackling teams in the Premier League but lets not take credit away from Manchester United. In the 3 games that they have played so far United have conceded 22 and suffered 23 fouls, that’s a mere 45 fouls in 3 games. The worst in this aspect are Wolverhampton Wonderers whose games are nothing less than bruise-fests. In the 3 games involving Wolves there has been 107 fouls.
Didier Drogba – the lethal weapon:
There is no surprise in the knowledge that Didier Drogba is one striker in the Premier League that hits the target more often than all his illustrious peers. But stats as phenomenal as his are just too good to be true but true they are. In the three games that Drogba has played he has taken 8 shots and 7 of them has been on target. On the contrary John Carew has taken 11 shots and only was on target. The only person with a 100% success rate in shots is Florent Malouda who has had 4 shots and all 4 of them have been on target and all four of them have resulted in goals.
Salgado- the king of tacklers:
Anyone who thought that Michel Salgado is an ageing and rapidly-disintegrating defender may like to reconsider their stance as this season Salgado has won more tackles than any other defender in the league. The second on that list is Fabrice Muamba of Bolton Wanderers.
Poor Liam Ridgewell:
There was a time when Cristiano Ronaldo was the most fouled player in the Premier League but that was just because of the mere fact that his menace was too hot to handle for the defenders and they preferred fouling him rather than being embarrassed to death by the skill master.
In the three games that have been played so far Liam Ridgewell of Birmingham has been the most fouled player. Its a staggering feat for a left back to be fouled as much as 12 times in just 3 games.
Manchester City – the pathetic shooters
The most baffling of all stats is the fact that Manchester City even after spending more than 400 million in 2 season cant shoot at all. With all the embarrassment of riches that they have City have just managed a total of 18 shots on goal this season, Just to get the clearer picture, Chelsea have had 43 shots, Arsenal 45 and Manchester United 39. So much so that even poor Blackpool have had more shots on goal than City with 26 shots. Perhaps all of Sheikh Mansour’s money is paying healthy dividends.
