I have been comparing some stats and I just don’t get how car tax is worked out.

I thought that the tax bands were determined by how eco friendly a car is????

Please look below and tell me what’s going on.

Range rover sport 2.7 TDV6 XS 5d Auto 28 mpg 265 g/km Tax G

Mazda RX8 1.3 Evolve 4d 24mpg 284g/km tax F

This is by no means the only example of this the list of cars that pollute more than the Range Rover, yet are in a lower tax.

Is this an error in the system or is it more of the same “FASHIONABLE AND UNJUST PERSECUTION OF 4X4s”

  1. Car tax is based on the capacity of the engine.

  2. The RX8 is in band G not band F.

The Evolve is in band F if it was registered before 23/03/06 (the same as every other car registered before this date) as stated on the government and Parkers website.

The TDV6 is only in band G if registered after this date, if it was registered before 23/03/06 it too would be in band F.If you had bothered to look at the "date of registration" information you would know this.

  3. It's based on more factors than engine size, every car since 2001 is also considered on engine size and CO2 Emissions as part of the governments new 'green tax' being added to certain services. They are trying to encourage the public to buy cars with smaller engines and those that are more fuel efficient, or alternative fuel cars.

The other factors affecting the price of tax based on fuel economy are:

    Transmission Type

    Fuel Type

    Make/Model

    Engine Size

Diesel is generally more expensive. An Automatic is cheaper because the point at which you change gears is the same and it save's fuel. There is also 'overdrive' on automatics that changes the point at which you may change gear to be fuel efficient.

The age of the vehicle is also a factor as the more recent cars are generally more fuel efficient.

  4. the whole thing is a con from start to finish and i don't own a 4x4

  5. Not really a question on global warming

  6. It is just a way our wonderful government can take money off us.
