Some conure questions?

I just bought a rose-crowned conure (here's a pic)http://www.mylittledarlings.com/files/buddyrosecrowned_conure_shomcdowell_opt.jpg

a couple of days ago from the petstore and I love him so much already! I saw on some websites that people have jungle gyms on top of their cages for them to play with when they are out, but they are like 100$!!! I want to get him one, so I thought I'd make one. Any ideas? I could use sticks and popsicle sticks and stuff. Could you please give me a pic of one or a website for building one or ideas you've had? Thanks!

  1. Just do a search on the web, there are thousands of varieties.  Also, make sure it's an appropriate size.

You might be able to find a good deal on Ebay.  If you chose to make one yourself, Manzanita branches are best.  The most important thing is be sure not to use glue, it can be toxic to your bird.  Make sure anything you use is thouroughly cleaned before introducing it to your bird.

    Good luck!

  2. EBAY... bird toys!

  3. A natural branch with leaves on it, bark on it that comes from a tree with no poison sprayed on it, would be a good start.  You can go from there.

  4. There are a lot of great toys you can get for them on the web.  I would not recommend constructing one yourself as if it is not sturdy and able to go through the destructiveness that is conures, it could be dangerous for your conure.  Also, don't give them popcicle sticks.  They can choke on splinters.  There are a variety of different types of toys which your conure should have at least one of at all times, and you should keep at least two sets to rotate so they do not get bored:

    - preening (lots of knots to untie)

    - activity toys (like a swing or a ladder)

    - foot toys (loose objects that are bird safe, which they can manipulate with their feet and beak to work their leg muscles *they will spend most of the time dropping them on the floor*

    - destructable toys (paper to shred, soft wood to break apart)

    - foraging toys (a toy that has a treat inside which takes a bit of manipulating to get at - this can even be a seed wrapped in paper)

    - comfort toy (a soft item to hide inside like a hanging nest cozy)

    - perches that have different shapes, textures and widths to work let muscles.

For some visual suggestions on these check out Chester's Cage on his videos at http://ca.youtube.com/user/militaryqt  It can get costly but what I did was get him a few to start and got one toy every time I was at the petstore picking up supplies... they add up fast.
