Question:

Some draft questions...?

1. Nowadays, the media is a big influence on who a team will draft. Right? What if the player a team drafted, which was who the media was recommending, turns out to be a bust. What will the media say?

2. When did the media start to be a great influence on who a team should draft, most specifically the top 2 or 3 picks?

3. If Andrew Bogut's (or maybe Marvin Williams) numbers don't improve, can they be like a Sam Bowie? Paul and Williams (Deron) are blossoming stars and will be rivals in the long run.

4. If Durant improves so much and Oden struggles with injuries, can he be another Sam Bowie?

5. Which is worse, picking Kwame Brown 1st overall or picking Darko Milicic 2nd overall in a draft class filled with so much talent?

I just read Sam Bowie's wikipedia page and he's not as bad as Kwame is. I was wondering why they consider Sam Bowie the worst bust ever. It was only because he was picked right before MICHAEL JORDAN! WOW! That's very painful.

  1. The Darko Milicic situation is different than with the Kwame Brown one.  I love European basketball, but at that time the NBA was becoming a little to stuck up on it.  Darko showed great skill for such a young age, but the problem was that teams were not properly scouting these foreign players at the time and this what led to many busts.  GMs were looking for the next Dirk Nowitzki, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker, Andrei Kirilenko, or Drazen Petrovic.  This what led to drafting busts like Darko, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Fran Vasquez, Sergei Monia, Victor Khryapa, Yaroslav Korolev, and others.  Now teams have wised up and now further scout players and this is why there has been a drop in foreign players drafted.  Kwame Brown was a horrible pick.  It is very risky to take a highschooler with the #1 pick, because they have not played with that high of a level of play.  Lebron James and Dwight Howard are exceptions to that.

  2. 1. The Team's executives are locked in a room with no communication whatsoever (phone, tv, etc) with the outside, so it is entirely their decision. prior to that, they can listen to the media if they want.

basically, if they take the medias choice and he is a bust, the media will instantly say they said so and should have taken so-and-so, who will probably be an all star by now.

    2. They were never all that great, since they went entirely on watching the games, not actual scouting reports or team workouts.

    3. Bogut just needs a system like the lakers to be at his best, and williams before paul is like anthony before wade... hes good, hes valuable, but the other has proven themself very quickly.

    4. Yes, however everyone will point to his injury as an excuse.

    5. Darko. just think of Wade, Bosh, Anthony, J. Howard, Hinrich, Barbosa, Haslem, Kaman, etc. Darko should have been the 58th pick then immediately sent to europe.

lol at least he can say he was in the same category as michael jordan... before either of them played a game.

  3. I remeber stephen a smith ripping blazers for picking Lamarcus and B-roy...now look at blazers they are yougn and Upcoming...

but u know this SO CALLED EXPERTS are just like us but who gets paid to talk c**p....

What was MJ thinking when he drafted Kwame ?d**n

  4. 1.No one will blame the media. The coaches shouldn't let anyone influence their decision. It is not wise to be influenced.

2.Usually when the media does that, the pick is usually recommended or common sense to pick them.We don't see anyone recommending drafting Graham at #1 pick in the 2005 NBA draft.

3.It usually depends on how the other picks will turn out.Michael Jordan turned out to be the greatest of all time later. But it isn't coaches fault,Sam Bowie was indeed the most recommended #2 pick that time.If Chris Paul or Deron Williams turns out in the top 10 point guards list of all-time.Then Andrew Bogut should hide behind a mask. But if Andrew turns out to be equally good,it'll just be named as "another good draft year".

4.Sam Bowie had a serious leg injury that prevented him from playing a lot of games the next four seasons. But no,he can't use that as an excuse. He has been held back for 4 years, but he didn't do anything the 7 last years in his career.Even if Greg Oden continues to be injured for the next 5 years,we still can't quite tell until he finishes his career.

5.None.No one really expected them to be a bust. It's just that no one can read the future. If I was the coach for the Wizards back then,I would've chosen Kwame Brown too because he IS indeed the most recommended pick. Some times, people think, luck doesn't exist. That's probably right, probably only unluckyness exist.

  5. yes sam bowie is a bust
