Some good plays with female leads?

Alright, so it's my senior year of high school and the drama teacher is asking that I look for some good plays. In the fall, our school always does a drama and I am having a really tough time finding a good one with a female lead. Also, the only real strong actors we have are females, so it would be good if there aren't too large male roles.

  1. The Diray of Anne Frank and the Odd Couple are two good high school shows with great female roles.

  2. Burn This - great play with only one female lead.

  3. Wicked.

  4. Medea and Taming of the Shrew both have great female leads (and they are both great plays too).

  5. Steel Magnolias comes to mind. Plays by Wendy Wasserstien or Beth Henley.

  6. Taming of the Shrew, The Odd Couple, Snow Angel (Which is really good! It is more of a comedy though...) And They Danced Real Slow in Jackson (This is a serious play, and really good, the lead character is a girl, and my highschool performed it and it was good and the highschoolers played even the little characters which was really good!) Maybe you could do your own version of Too Much Light, this is really cool!!!

  7. I haven't personally read it, but I've heard that "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-the-Moon Marigolds" is pretty girl-heavy and good. I think it has a pretty small cast, though. I suppose you could also the "The Miracle Worker", which has a larger cast.

From prior experience, I do NOT recommend "Kiss Me Kate" or "The Pajama Game" (though those are musicals).

  8. I think one of the best ones you could do would be "Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare.  Though there are male characters, the female is dominant.
