Question:

Some goofy Pipe in my Basement

No not a crack pipe you goofs, a pipe is screwed (I think it is) into the drain of my basement. Light to moderate rain I see nothing on basement floor. This week Jehovah opened the freakin' floodgates and water started pouring from the top of this pipe onto my freakin' prestine basement floor. What is this pipe? what is it's purpose (Apperantly not to keep out water)? Can I remove it and if so what can I do to keep water from coming from this spot? Becouse this dumb-*** three foot pipe sticking up out of the floor aint doing jack! Any info would be greatly appreciatted.

  1. These are called stand pipes. They are use to control the level of water in the drain and the out side water level.

Do not cap the pipe. If you do the next rain will cause a water hydralic lock and possibly lift the basement concrete.

Take a look outside and see if a sewer is near your curb, some people cover the sewer a little so it drains slowly, this lowers the level of water in the stand pipe.

You might want to contact a plumber to install a better flood control.

  2. It appears you are on the low side of your Sewage\Storm drain system in your town. It also appears you are S.O.L., when the flood gates are open you will be flooded! You can "attempt" to cap all pipes into your house. But I Guarantee you will miss one, Move to higher ground!

  3. Sounds like somebody had plans for this house before you got in there. They may have been planing to ad another plumbing device. I would cap it, flood my drains and see if a problem results. If you have no problems after that, cut it below ground level and cap it again.

  4. get size and cap end of pipe
