get him some educational story books or cdroms are also a better choice , something creative like clay moulds if he is fond of clothing you also opt for that acompanied by his favourite chocolate or sweet if he likes that.

I gave my 4 yr old niece a "car bag."  Stuff for her to in the car in a cute travel-related theme bag:  coloring book, doodle pad, interactive book, kid magazine, markers (that don't mark on everything else) and a kid's song CD. We are family with zero little boys...so I'm sure there are some other "boy" things you could add.  I made sure the actual bag was large enough to accommodate some of her own things.

WHile this may be in the wrong section here's my ideas:

If you go with toys get something that takes imagination: Cars, trucks, trains, and a play mat

Airplanes

Legos

Kenex

Playmobil (so fun but a bit pricey in the States although Target does carry some of them)

Some of your favorite books: such as Ferdinand, Bible Stories, Thomas, Beatrix Potter, Billy and Blaze, things like that.

Puzzles

Dress up clothes - fireman outifit, police, officer, etc

Play Dough and accessories (you can easily make homeade and scent it)

Toy animals/bugs (you can find tubes of them at toy stores)

Books on his favorite animals or subject (my nephews are wild about anything with trains!)

Book son rocks and some cool ones

Early science items

Try to steer away from videos and video type items if you can - kids this age need to pretend for themselves.

If your friend won't freak there's always classic boy toys such as pop gun/cap gun with a cowboy hat and holsters! ALWAYS a big hit with boys!  (He's a bit young for a sling shot but keep it in mind for later)

Craft supplies - paper, crayons, glue, rounded tip scissors, washable markers, etc - in a rubbermaid box.

Be creative - don't go for the most obvious.

If he lives near a Chuck E Cheese's or a fun kid place, you could give a gift certificate for a meal/tokens to play games.

You can't go wrong with age appropriate learning toys or games that engage him. Today kids are spoiled with so many gadgets, and some don't stimulate their mind enough and cause them to be spontaneous and creative, so anything that can help him develop in these ways would be beneficial.

Around this age I give all kids (nieces, nephew, friends' kids) a labeler. The kind with different colored tapes that shoot out. This cost under $10. I still give the old-fashioned squeeze trigger kind, although the new electronic ones may be cooler...and more expensive. Every kid I have ever given one to, including my own, loves it. Not only is it fun, but around age 4-5 is a great time for "invented spelling". They will label everything in the house....and the labels have always removed easily with no damage.

Also around this age or a little older I give real receipt books in 2 or 3 varieties. They play restuarant, store, hairdresser, etc. and love the fact that they are making duplicate copies. I usually do up a little "office" kit in a plastic box.
