Some kind of phone scam or something?

I pick up the phone and hear a recorded voice - 'hold the line please I have a call for this number' in an american accent, (Im in the UK). Is this a genuine thing or just more telesales/scam stuff

Sounds like a telemarketer to me.  Hanging up is the best idea.  They'll eventually get the picture.

It's a scam... keep hanging up! It happens here in the U.S. too.
