  1. Remember Henry VIII?  When he died, he left no male heirs to the throne--and he stated in his will that the throne should go to his niece, the daughter of his sister.  His niece gave up her claim in favor of her own daughter, Jane.  Jane was rushed into a marriage with the son of a duke, who had ambitions to be the power behind the throne, and Jane was announced as Queen.   But, the people rallied behind Mary Tudor, and Jane and those around her were arrested.  Most of them were beheaded, to help Mary solidify her claim to the throne.  Kind of a messy time.

  2. Lady Jane Grey was executed on a charge of high treason on tower hill by beheading.  Mary Tudor signed her death warrant months after imprisoning the 16 yr old and despite promises to be merciful to the child who was little more than a pawn in a game of power.  there is evidence, however, that Mary was pushed into this decision after an unsuccessful (but worrying) uprising in favour of jane grey as queen.  in order to ensure it never happened again Mary put to death all involved.

Lady Jane Grey was a great neice of Henry the eighth - her mother, Frances Grey, was born Frances Brandon, a daughter of henry's sister mary and her husband (henry's closest friend) Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk.  Jane was a very quiet, studious and colourless child by all acconts (her name seems fitting!) who was dominated and treated very badly by her parents. she was also a devout protestant.  during the reign of Henry's only son, Edward (also a firm believer in the protestant faith) jane was married against her will to Guildford Dudley, the fourth son of the duke of somerset, the kings most powerful advisor (he was Lord Protector i believe).

Edward died aged fifteen but before he did, terrified that catholicism would be returned to England under the rule of his sister Mary - whom Henry had decreed was the next heir if Edward had no children - Edward changed his father's will.  He made it so the crown would pass to Jane Grey.  Jane, although she did not wish to offend Mary, was so passionate about keeping the protestant faith she agreed to be queen.  Really she was about to be manipulated and used by Dudley through his weak-willed son.

But Mary declared herself queen and gathered an army of loyal defenders who knew she was the rightful heir to the throne.  After a reign of nine days Lady Jane Grey - who had entered the tower of london to be crowned queen of england - was labelled a traitor.  She was given one chance to redeem herself to a queen who so desperately did not want to put her young cousin to death - if she would convert to the catholic faith Mary would release her and let her live quietly with her books, a devoted life of study, which was what Jane desired.  But her faith was so strong she chose it over the chnace to live.

Still Mary procrastinated but "jane grey supporters" arrived at the gates of London.  Although she managed to dispell the rebellion and capture Dudley with most of his sons (Robert Dudley did of course survive and went on to be beloved of Elizabeth I) Mary's advisors pushed her to end any further hopes of the protestants or any chance of being ejected from her throne, by putting to death all those involved in the jane grey affair.

As you can tell i could go on for an awfully long time on this subject but i'll shut up now - hope thats ok - i think i got the main facts straight although in a brief outline!!!!  im not sure the paragraphs are quite right for each question but i reckon you can sort it easy enough.

  3. She spent her childhood at Bradgate in Leicestershire, where the ruins of her parents' house can still be seen. The grounds are open to the public, and are well worth a visit.

She was only a little lass in her teens when it all happened - probably not much older than you - think about that when you're worried about spots, puppyfat or the latest phone!
