Question:

Some of our jade plants live, some die. All are cared for the same way. Why is this?

We have six jade plants. They are all roughly the same size, all potted in sandy soil, and watered sparingly as needed. We keep them all in the same room, getting the exact same amount of light.

Three of our plants are thriving, and three are withering- leaves dropping, and trunks shriveling up. But, we have taken some clippings of the sick plants and rooted them; they grow beautifully!

I thought jades were supposed to be "easy" plants? What are we doing wrong? Or are our plants just "jaded"? (sorry couldn't resist...serious ? though)

  1. jade plants are not usually picky, the soil should be tested for "ph". the nutrients in the soil might have all been the same when you started, but for some reason some plants use them up faster than others. When you get a PH kit from a hardware or garden supply store it will have a chart attached with a list of PH levels for certain plants. It also gives directions on how to correct the problems.
