There have been numerous undersized players in the history of NBA with a few managing to overcome their physical lack through the dominating game. Before we get started with the list of some of the undersized players in the NBA we must know what we mean
when we say undersized.
Players playing in the assists department need not be so largely framed and stand around 6 feet. However, when it comes to the important positions like centre then the least that a player stands in those positions is 6 feet 9 inches. It is due to this reason
that some of the players though playing in the scoring positions still don’t meet the usual structured demands. But still with their game they are able to deal with this and successfully emerge as the top players of the game.
Chuck Hayes, Houston Rockets
Chuck Hayes has spent all of six seasons in the NBA with the Houston Rockets which doesn’t happen now days. Chuck Hayes plays in the front court position standing at 6 ft. 6 inches. However, due to the inconsistency of Yao Ming, who stands over 7 feet he
is the man often looked upon to take his place.
However, Yao’s absence from the team every game leaves behind a big gap which Chuck Hayes has been able to deal with so far. Though his statistics aren’t that good but he is certainly one player who with the determination and hard work is constantly increases
on the numbers.
Currently, Chuck Hayes averages 6.6 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, 0.7 blocks per game, 2.1 assists per game and 0.7 steals per game though he only plays around 23 minutes per game. With Yao Ming’s recovery restricting him to only a few minutes
on court each night, Hayes puts up some unbelievable performances which have resulted in the Houston Rockets winning quite a few games so far.
DeJaun Blair, San Antonio Spurs
At the college level, DeJaun Blair played for the Pitt Panthers. During this time, he absolutely dominated the game with the physical play that he brought into the game.
But when it came to the time of him moving into the NBA, there were some concerns over his survival especially when he stood 6 ft. 5 inches without shoes as the NBA drafts began. However, he answered all his critics after a slow start to his career. In just
the second season with the San Antonio Spurs, Blair started he has played in the centre position in all of the 45 games played by the Spurs so far.
The statistics that this player maintains currently are of 7.7 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, 0.8 steals per game and 0.4 blocks per game. Blair is without any doubts one of the best and talented players in the NBA. The amazing thing about the above
mentioned statistics is that he Blair plays around 19 minutes per game.
With the passage of time, Blair is expected to get even better and make his position among some of the best undersized players in the NBA.
