Some of your answers are good ... but I live in Tx and they live in VA how do I get to know them after 9 years

I'm a long distance dad and just got to talk with my kids.. with gas being so high how can I build a relationship with my 12 year old Daughter and 11 year old Son..

You could also do video cam with them so they and you can see each other often.  There are ways to be there without being there physically.  As long as you make a conscious effort they will be happy!

at the very least, spend time with them on the phone at their convenience (digital phone svc has done away with long-distance charges). ask everything about them. keep it real. keep it honest. and if you haven't had a relationship with them for years, be ready to explain why.

ask about school. call their school (or your ex) and get the school's website to learn about it/keep up with activities and the teacher's website if he/she has one (might check with the ex first).

ask what they want for their bdays and holidays. then send it (or have it shipped from a website). get it there ON TIME.

send $$ (even small amts). kids love having their own spending money.

send things that remind you of them or makes you think of them - along with a note that says so.

and if you really want to do what's absolutely best for THEM, move to VA.
