  1. There are several pilgrimage hikes starting from France and heading to San Juan de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. It's a catholic pilgrimage.

Have a look at the following link especially for the map : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Way_of_St._...

  2. The tomb of San Juan of Compostela is in Galicia isn't it?  It's a holy pilgrimage.

  3. El Camino de Santiago  (the road to Santiago de Compostela, which is Saint James of Campo Stele (the field of stars) (it is not San Juan which is saint John).

This holy pilgrimage has existed for many centuries, since midieva times. Some of the main starting points are Notre Dame in Paris, The Cathedral in Chartres, and the Valley of Roncesvalles in northern Spain, though there are many more routes. It has always been a religious experience.

By doing this pilgrimage on foot, the person presumably reaches a state of grace that is equivalent to a "passport" direct to heaven. And along the way at each stopover a paper is stamped to prove that the person has done the different stages of the road.

Nowadays,  people are not as religious minded, many people do it just for the experience of sharing the trip and the effort...

Walking in company of many people during all those day long  trecks, sleeping at the inns (albergues) provided along the roads, and sharing this experience is very edifying in itself.
