The contention of supporters that lowering the drinking age to 18 would have positive results is illogical. Increasing the population of drinkers would increase a particular characteristic, in this case the number of alcohol related deaths due to accidents. .

  1. Yea that totally doesn't make sense to me,

I mean here we have the drinking age at 21 and we have 16-18 year olds drinking illegally.

And yet we have people supporting to lower the age, its crazy,

i mean i dont understand how people say that lowering the age is going to make less people drink,

in fact it will make more drink because the high school/college students are excited to do it now that they can.

And lowering it will just make the younger ones rebel.

-Because now the age is 21 to drink and we have 16-18 year olds drinking illegally

-But when the drinking age is lowered then youll have even younger people drinking it because theyre that much closer to getting there so they cant wait.

Im so outraged at the fact that there are people even considering lowering the age if anything INCREASE IT!!

so i totally agree that you think it is illogical!!!

  2. 16 yr old do it illegally. 18 yr old do it illegally.

You give them the power to do it legaly they'll make things a hundred times worse

  3. It is the taboo placed upon drinking that is the problem. Many countries have lower or no drinking age and yet they don't have the number of alcohol issues that are seen in the US. If drinking was not seen as evil, we would have fewer issues here too. Allowing younger people to drink legally would remove the stigma from drinking, and thus place it in the same category as any other beverage and reduce the tendency to abuse it.

Lowering the drinking age or eliminating it, would place younger drinkers in more contact with experienced drinkers, thus showing by example how to imbibe without abusing it.

Rising the drinking age to 21 has not curbed the drinking of alcohol by those under that age. At best it might have removed some alcohol out of the high school system, but it is a sorry 18 or 19 year old in college or out in the world that doesn't know someone over the age of 21 to buy them alcohol. At age 16, I did not have a problem getting alcohol in this country when I first came here and the drinking age was 21 back then.

A drinking age of 21 is an empty feel good measure that does not prevent youthful drinking; it merely places it outside of more controlled environments where responsible people can monitor it.
