Why are some people called princes but the siblings of princes get the title Duchess or Duke or Lady.

What's considered a Lady and how is that different from Princess? What's considered a Duke or Duchess and how is that different from Prince or Princess.

  1. Well there are five ranks of the Peerage

    Duke

    Marquess

    Earl

    Viscount

    Baron

All daughters of the Duke, Marquess, Earl have the curstey title Lady

But daughters of Viscount and Baron have the curstey title honourable. The Hounourable Mary Smith. Honourable James Smith. When meeting someone with an honourable prefix you don't say "Hello Hounorable James" on if introducing them you refer to them as the hounourable what ever there name is, or when writing to them you use the prefix

There are royal Dukes. HRH Duke of Kent, HRH Duke of Gloucester

  2. Some royals have auxiliary title such as Duke,Duchess,Earl,Countess, et cetera, granted to them. A royal duke, duchess, earl, marquess and the like are usually higher up on the social-totem pole than a non-royal duke, duchess.

Here,in order of importance is the ranking of the titles:

    King/Queen

Prince/Princess* they may also bear royal titles of duke, duchess, marquess, marchioness and the like and are higher in precedence than the following non-royal titles:

    Duke/Duchess

    Marquess/Marchioness

    Earl/Countess

    Viscount/Viscountess

    Baron/Baroness

These are hereditary titles that are passed down to the next generation.

These titles generally have been held in a family for a long time, granted to them by a sovereign for favors done for the crown. Some of these titles come with land, land that often generates an income from the businesses ran from them.

You can go to http://www.royal.gov/uk to find out more about titles granted to non-royals by clicking on Monarchy Today, then clicking on Watch Find out what happens at Investitures and go through each aspect of what happens.

A "Lady" can be any female who happens to be a daughter of a Duke,Marquess,Earl or "Lady" can be part of a courtesy-title(what you call someone like "Mrs. or Miss); a non-Royal Marchioness, for example is addressed as "My Lady Marchioness."  Generally, a member of the peerage/nobility can be addressed as Lord/Lady Name of the Senior Title Possessed.

  3. A lot of confusion is caused by the fact that royalty and nobility are two separate classes.

A king, queen and their children and grandchildren (princes and princesses) are royalty. Anyone who is royal has HRH (His or Her Royal Highness) in front of their name. The king and queen are HM (His or Her Majesty). In Britain, princes can hold other titles as well. The oldest son is the heir to the throne and is called Prince of Wales. His younger brothers are princes, but are known by their titles as royal dukes - Duke of York etc.

The nobility have various ranks, the highest being a Duke (not a royal duke, no HRH). The titles go all the way down to a knighthood - someone with Sir in front of their name. A Lady could be someone as high in rank as the daughter of an earl, or as low as a knight's wife. It's all very complicated, but that's the main points.

  4. Because the titles are made because each are bellow the pieces of **** that preceeds them. The lower titles are the bigger pieces of ****.
