Question:

Some questions about eating healthy and exercising?

Recently I decided to start taking my own lunch to work, since in the long run I will save money instead of buying subway or fast food everyday. For a while I would take a nice little meal including a turkey sandwich with a slice or two of cheese, a small snack bag or some chips, or preferably Ritz crackers or wheat thins...and I wash it all down with tea that I always drink at work and at home.

Lately I have found myself making small snacks that are probably unhealthy, like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a peanut butter and honey sandwich. I usually just make one and eat it and that holds me off until I get home for dinner. I usually work 8 or 9 hour shifts, and dinner is usually at home waiting for me.

Should I be eating more healthy snacks? and if so, does anyone have any suggestions to some quick and easy snacks to eat? I only get a 30 min lunch break.

Also, I don't really have a lot of free time per week, since I work about 30-40 hours a week + school. I pretty much am on my feet usually walking around for 7-8 hours a day, what kind of exercises should I do to help burn some fat. Running probably won't work since my feet hurt by the time I get out of work and I have other things to do in the mornings before I go to work or school.

Any advice is appreciated!

  1. Who said peanut butter sandwiches are unhealthy? Just make sure you are using all natural peanut butter.

Also, forget the jelly.  Make sure you are using wheat bread instead of white bread, and there's a perfectly healthy sandwich with complex carbohydrates, and plenty of protein.  Another snack you could have is fat-free yogurt, or trail mix/trail mix bars.

Ritz and chips, like you mentioned, aren't too healthy.  I would opt for trail mix/trail mix bars.  You can always bring fruit as well.

That walking alone is giving you a fair amount of exercise.  If you want more exercise you could try perhaps playing a sport whenever you have the time.  Maybe you can ride a bike or play some basketball outside when you get home.

    Best of luck!

  3. Peanut butter and jelly isn't really that unhealthy. Peanut butter has protein, and if you use whole wheat bread and healthy fruit spreads with real fruit and not much corn syrup, it's not a bad part of a balanced diet.

For healthy snacks, look in the "Organic" section of your grocery store. Ritz and Wheat Thins have a lot of oil and salt. You could get something more nutritious, like sweet potato chips, Terra chips, and Pirate's Booty. Then put a handful in a bag and put it in your lunch. Don't forget a piece of fruit; you may also want a vegetable snack, like carrot sticks. Pick whatever fruit you like to eat.
