Some relevant questions regarding the future of Commonwealth Games
Questions regarding the relevance of Commonwealth Games had started surfacing long before the controversy that took place at Delhi. Before coming on to the questions which are rather potential, relevant and can bring major positive changes in the event,
we must ponder upon the points relevant to the history of the Commonwealth Games.
Commonwealth Games, which are organized after every four years are considered among the largest sports’ events in the world. However, for participating into the games, a country must have to be one from 71 commonwealth member nations, which at some point
of time had been a part of the British Empire.
Addressing the concerned questions, the first call for the change has come from the Australian team, which, according to the John Taylor, have resented upon the fact that good athletes from the nations other than the Commonwealth cannot participate in the
event. Moreover, there are remarkable players from within the Commonwealth countries who have not joined the event owing to personal compulsions and commitments. The Team Australia has said that in order to make the event more interesting, the participation
of all the high profile players must be ensured in the Games by all means.
While giving his remarks upon the relevance of the event, an expert said that the Games would very much remain relevant to their true aim of bringing harmony among the Commonwealth member nations until the athletes would keep on joining them with true enthusiasm.
Moreover, the spectators too are there to enjoy and encourage them. If the matter is otherwise, things need to be analyzed closely.
While commenting upon the history of the Commonwealth Games, he said that the legacy Games is dependent upon the history. He said that as things are changing in the Commonwealth nations with the passage of the time, the Games, too, must change accordingly.
In this regards, he said that all the countries must work in close collaboration with the Commonwealth Games Federation in order to come up with suitable changes for the Games.
An important factor regarding Commonwealth Games is the monetary benefits awarded to t he players. Since the players who win the competitions at Commonwealth Games do not get any monitory rewards, the players with high profile and greater potential, instead
of following the event, like to work out with the sponsors with monitory rewards.
Besides monitory rewards, other issues which hinder athletes from attending the Games include improper security measures, poor living arrangements and inappropriate medical facilities provided by the host nation. The expert further said that if the management
of the event ensures finishing all the arrangements well on time, this gives the athletes confidence regarding the preparations, and they tend to take the event more seriously.
Discussing the relevance of the Commonwealth Games, Perry Crosswhite, the games expert from Australia said that the biggest advantage of the Commonwealth Games is that they provide chances to the athletes in more obscure sports to compete on the international
stage.
While shedding more light on the point, he said that sports like table tennis, wrestling, badminton and others were less likely to be played in most of the Commonwealth member countries. Perhaps that is why they were declared as low profile sports. When
such games are played at Commonwealth Games, athletes who hail from the countries where these sports are not that much common can also participate into them.
Another important point worth pondering is that the size of the venues which are required to conduct the games hinders many countries from hosting the event. Expressing his views, the expert said that they must disregard the size of the opening and ending
ceremonies, instead focus on the event and the necessary preparations, which ensure the quality play from the athletes. While concluding his remarks, Perry Crosswhite said that Commonwealth member countries could address this issue too, if they would work
out the things with Commonwealth Games Federation.
