K well last night i guess I got a virus and here is what it does:

Changes my wallpaper to a message urging me to get a spyware detector software blah blah

Skrewed up google and all my links are redirected

I cant update my anti spyware program

my anti virus program stops scanning at 20k files (i have over 200k)

and a few minutes ago as i was doing a spyware scan the screen turned blue and said the system has shut down to prevent damage, blah blah and it did a whole bunch of c**p, but when i pressed enter it just went back to my desktop and my spyware scanner, so obviously it wasnt the system doing it. How would I go about getting rid of this virus? I tried system restore it didnt work

  1. Try getting a couple of free anti-spyware and anti-virus programs from

    www.download.com

I recommend the free version of Avast anti-virus and Spyware Terminator.

    Run the spyware program first.

If the virus prevents you from doing this, try performing a system recovery if you have the option. Most computers come with system recovery disks or have the option under Start Menu - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools.

The system recovery application is superior to the system restore application and will give you twp options. The first is to recover and restore the factory shipped applications and settings without reformatting the hard drive, and the other is to reformat the hard drive and then recover and restore the factory shipped applications and settings.

I recommend you back up your pesonal data and choose the second option, the one that will reformat the drive and then restore the applications, because if you don't reformat the hard drive there is a chacne that you won't remove the virus.

If i were you I would run an anti-spyware and anti-virus program on your pc even after you reformat and recvoer to be sure the virus is gone.

  2. Restart your PC in safe mode with networking

Download, install and run a full scan with Malwarebytes

  3. boot into safe mode and (you'll have to hit F8 or F10 or another key while its starting up to select boot options) run your virus scan.
