  1. Just two different names

    BTW - don't eat them!

  2. There is no difference between a mushroom and a toadstool.

  3. Mushrooms and toadstools are the same thing. The name toadstool goes back to the mystical wonders like faeries!

They are quite annoying and some can be poisonious. Some types can actually get very large (dinner plate size) and others can let out harmful gasses. I always make sure I mow them down so that I don't have to worry about them getting to big.

When I was 14 the fire department evacuated our neighborhood while do to someone having a mushroom erupt in their front yard and release poisonous gasses. I have lived here in florida all my life and never heard anything else about a poisonous mushroom but hey....they apparently knew!

  4. No difference!  And not harmful to your grass.  Most likely, you are receiving a good amount of water in the rootzone (unlike earlier over the summer?) and therefore, organic matter is more easily broken down by microbes and fungi.  Simply, it's evidence of decomposition within the soil profile.

  5. If you don't know the difference, they are toadstools to you and you should leave them alone.  Toadstools are generally not safe to eat, mushrooms are safe to eat.  You don't want to make a mistake and try the wrong thing, it is a very bad thing.
