Question:

Some thoughts about the men's draw (Wimbledon only)?

i already mentioned here that i think the men's draw is (was :) )pretty lopsided because of the #4 seed Davydenko. this guy simply doesn't exist on grass (like he has proved in the 1st round. it was his 7th attendance at Wimbledon - he lost 5 times in the 1st round, once in the 2nd and once in the 4th), so i'm very happy the Djoker is out and the balance is restored. but this is sheer luck.

since there are so few grass court tournaments, the ATP should think of a new seedings policy for Wimbledon. it's simply ridiculous to seed Davydenko as #4 only because of his ranking acquired on hard and clay courts. on grass he's absolutely no threat for no one.

my suggestion is to initiate a commitee that fixes the 32 best players, no coincidence and depending on the achievements of the past years (Davy wouldn't be in the top 10 anymore). the commitee should be of ancient Wimbledon cracks, e.g. Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Edberg, Becker, Sampras and the like.

what do you think about this?

  1. i agree 100% with you i was thinking the same thing, and a special commitee would make wimbledon alot sweeter

  2. In the end, it doesn't really matter where you're seeded.  If you're good enough, you'll win regardless of your seeding or your draw.  Just look at Boris Becker in 1985, when as an unseeded player, 17 years old, he won the whole tournament.  As for Davydenko, his overall ranking is based on his results from the entire 52 weeks leading up to Wimbledon, so despite his lack of previous grass court success, he's earned the right to be the #4 seed.  And besides, nobody else ranked below him has done anything to warrant being seeded higher, on grass or otherwise.

  3. That is a pretty good idea, assuming that the "ancient Wimbledon cracks" are following the players of todays game.

The drawback would be possible bias.  Committee members might show favoritism to certain players on the basis of nationality, personality, good looks, etc.

Also, the professionals might have a bias towards how people play the game.  When Agassi won Wimbledon nobody expected him to do so because he was a baseliner.  Given the success of Hewitt, Agassi, and Federer it is obviously possible to win Wimbledon from the baseline.  Yes, I know Federer can play well at the Net, but he's not a serve & volleyer like, say, Edberg.

  4. Great idea. That should **** Wimbledon up the ***. And it's stupid way of ranking.

  5. In actual fact, Wimbledon does often change seedings depending on a player's grass court abilities, but lately they seem to have been just doing it by rankings.

Yes, I do agree with that. It's the same for the women's draw. To have Jankovic as the SECOND seed is just stupid! She's never done well at Wimbledon, only at Birmingham, and tbh her game just isn;t suited for the grass. I agree. This would improve the tournament a lot.
