  1. Start with easy recipes:

I'd go with trying to make omusubi (rice balls), teriyaki, katsu (fried cutlets), shumai and gyoza (dumplings).

  2. sushi! the easiest j*p food.

i guess a tip is to watch cooking videos on youtube to get ideas on what and how to cook.

  3. This is an easy recipe that the Japanese eat for bento (lunch box):

    1   pound boneless chicken thighs

    2   TBSP soy sauce

2   TBSP mirin  (sweet cooking rice vinegar)

(stocked in Asian section of market)

    1    tsp grated bamboo root

    1    TBSP sugar

wooden bamboo skewers, soaked in water

Cut  chicken into bite sized pieces.  Combine soy sauce, mirin , ginger and sugar.  Add chicken and marinate 10 minutes.

Thread chicken on skewers, then broil on preheated medium high heat, turning constantly.  Cook for about 5-6 minutes.  Serve with rice balls, sprinkled with sesame seeds..
