  1. Most people get the private pilot license so they can fly for fun.  It allows them to rent small aircraft and fly for fun.  Some of them buy their own small aircraft. It is the same as people buying boats, motorcycles, or second homes etc - for recreation.  Most of private pilots do not plan on having a career in aviation.

You have to understand that in countries like the US, and Canada general aviation used to be popular, without many government restrictions, and not too expensive - so pretty much anyone who had a decent job could afford to fly a small aircraft if he/she  really wanted to.  With the ever increasing fuel prices and aircraft prices this is becoming a thing of the past.

  2. A holder of a private pilot's licence may not fly "for hire or reward".  It means you can fly a light aircraft for your own purposes, or to take friends and family etc for a flight.  To be paid for flying you needs at least a commercial pilot's licence.

The private licence is the first step if you wish to progress to a commercial licence and then perhaps to an ATPL which you will require to fly airliners etc..  There's more to it than that, but that's the general idea.

  3. As a private pilot you may fly your aircraft in the  furtherance of a business(your own)or be compensated for fuel expenses etc. in the furtherance of someone else's business (points). Example of another advantage,  my first cross country  flight took 15 min.  The same trip driving takes 1hr. and 15 min.  There is the sportsmans class that offers less advantages but requires that you have a drivers license.
