  1. It's a stunningly beautiful gem of a city, and the people there are cool, but it is VERY small. It's also more expensive than most cities in the South Island.

It's a popular town for tourists & so you could probably get a job in the tourism / hospitality industry.

I don't live there, but I've been there a couple of times & I loved my visits. There are some really charming places, and good cafes and restaurants.

If you're a nature-lover, this is a great place for you.

The most awesome movie theater I've ever been to is there. It's called Cinema Paradiso and you can actually sit inside of an old Beetle convertiable and watch the movie. It's so random, it's awesome.

Stay at the Purple Cow when you go there to check out  the town if you're young. It has a stunning view & there are cool ppl working and staying there.

  2. I don't live in Wanaka but I've been there a few times.  It's bloody expensive to live there.  The nearest reasonably cheap supermarket is at Frankton, about 60 km. away.  Housing is ridiculously expensive.  But it's a nice place.  There's skiing, the lake, fishing, climbing and lots of interesting ethnic restaurants; Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian...  And there's a party atmosphere all year round.  Quite a lot of jobs in the hospitality industry, but your main problem will be finding an affordable place to live.

  3. so you decided on Wanaka.

well it has a population of only 3, 330 which is smaller than Westport and Greymouth which you said were both too small.

In terms of expense well check out the trademe real estate listings - it wouldn't be much cheaper than Queenstown. you will pay roughly 10 cents more a litre for petrol than you would in any of the main centres and you should also expect to pay a good 10% more for general supplies as there is only one supermarket, New World which is dearer than supermarkets like Pak'n'save and Countdown which again can be found in the main centres.

with such a small population jobs will be harder to find

so good luck to you - its the price you pay for wanting to be closes to mountains
