Q1) Choose the correct one of the following

1. I expect to be there many studying English

2. I expect there to be many studying English in the library

3. I expect to be many studying English

4. I expect there to be many studying English

The answer was #4.

I know #1 and #3 can't be an answer.

But I don't know why #2 is wrong..

Q2) Being that the United States has a food surplus , it is hard to see why anyone in our country should go hungry.

Someone told me that "Being that" is wrong. Why is it wrong?

  1. 2 has something to do with not starting a sentence with a preposition such as being that....English is a very strange language....it should be updated...also spelling of many words are odd....they are spelled way different from how they sound....this whole answer is poorly written if checked by an English teacher...but it gets across my point...as for #1...not sure, but I think it also has something to do with that last phrase in the library being in the wrong place in the sentence....

  2. Why is #2 wrong?

Beats me.  I don't see any reason why adding a prepositional phrase would have any impact on the grammar of this sentence.  Did you copy it correctly?  It has no period, and that's wrong, but then, neither does #4.  I wish I could help.

You use "Since" instead of "Being that." "Being" is a verb and requires a subject:

"The case being that the United States has a food surplus.."

would be correct, but this is a very awkward way to say something very simple.  You are better off not using a phrase like "being that."

  3. I would say that 2 is wrong because there isn't a noun. 'I expect there to be many people studying English in the library' sounds better. Also the 'to be' should be changed to 'will be'

With answer 4, you don't need the noun because it isn't as specific: 'I expect there to be many studying English'. It doesn't state a time or place and so the noun isn't necessary, however it can be used.

Q2 does make sense, however these would sound better:

    1. Due to the United States having such a food surplus, it is hard to see why anyone in our country should go hungry.

    2. Since the United States has such a food surplus, it is hard to understand why anyone in our country should go hungry.

    ('such' also makes it better)

  4. No 2. is I expect that there will be many studying in the library.

Q2. is Since the United States has a good food surplus, it is hard to see why anyone in our country should go hungry.

Or:The United States has a good food surplus and subsequently is in hard to see why anyone in the country should go hungry.

Or I don't see why anyone should go hungry in the United States since there is a good food surplus.

You can't start a sentence with Being that

    Take your pick
