A truck is stopped at a stoplight. When the light turns green, the truck accelerates at 3.0 m/s2. At the same instant, a car passes the truck going 16 m/s. Where and when does the truck catch up with the car?

  1. The equation you want is v=d/t and a=v/t or a=(d/t)/t

    Now we want both d (distance) to be the same so we get

    d=vt and d=at^2

    If the distance is the same then vt=at^2. We can then remove on t from both sides and get v=at or to put in the numbers 16=3t or t=16/3.

    Now sub that in for one of the formulas and we get d=16(16/3) or 85 1/3 meters.
