Okay i leave my cockatiels out of the cage sometimes when i'm not home. please Spare me the babble about your not suppose to do that, because i know but i feel guilty for leaving them in their cage!!

Anyways i came home and my poor little cockatiel had blood all over her belley, so we thought the other cockatiels attacked her. Then i looked where all the blood was coming from and i realized her toe got stuck in between the caged bars and it ripped off completley. I'm freaking out!!! We called all the vets in the are, none of them are avion vets!! The closest one to where i live is 2 hours away!! I would drive but it just so happens that this morning i took my car to get a brake job, go figure. Anyways do you think she will be alright? What ca i do on the mean time to help her? The toe is no longer bleeding and she's eating and being curious.

Please help i would greatly apprciate it!!!

  1. Hi

If the bleeding has stopped and she is eating and drinking, she will be fine, dont worry.

  2. Clean it and put some antibiotic cream on her toe and a small band aid so she can not pick at it or the other bird can't. Call your vet first thing tomorrow.

  3. Birds can survive missing toes...so, if the bleeding has stopped and she is behaving normally, then I wouldn't worry. It is too late to do anything now anyways. I would, however, watch her closely for any infection that may hit that open sore area. If she begins to act sick then take her to the avion vet - if you can afford it - even if it is 2 hours away.

Sometimes, reality is, even though we love our pets as if they were family, we cannot afford to give them the extra care needed and must trust nature.

Don't feel too guilty over what happened - things happen. Even as a parent of a child, you cannot always be there and kids, just like your bird, will get hurt - it is part of life.  Go easy on yourself....

  4. I agree with christina.  You can't do much about it now and birds usually live perfectly fine lives with missing toes.  That happened to one of my cockatiels while a neighbor was watching her and she is fine.  If the bleeding starts up again you can use Quickstop to stop the bleeding, but other than that, there isn't much to do.

  5. As the posters said, she should be okay... I have a parakeet who I let fly around when I wasn't home.... she landed on my lovebird cage and they ripped of three of her toes! And she is still alive and well! :)

If the bleeding does start back up and you don't have any QuickStop around... use corn starch... it will help stop the bleeding.
