Georgian forces and separatists in South Ossetia agree to observe a ceasefire and hold Russian-mediated talks to end their long-simmering conflict.

Hours later, Georgian forces launch a surprise attack, sending a large force against the breakaway province and reaching the capital Tskhinvali.

South Ossetian rebel leader Eduard Kokoity accuses Georgia of a "perfidious and base step".

The head of Georgian forces in South Ossetia says the operation is intended to "restore constitutional order" to the region, while the government says the troops are "neutralising separatist fighters attacking civilians".

It did. The news in Moscow from early morning of the first day of fighting to the evening were more and more grim. They contained fewer and fewer detail. Which meant the Russians had to retreat.

To Max Lomax: n**i had the same attitude to Russians. So, you have a nice company. By the way, along with American rockets Poland got American tornado, first tornado in its history, as far as I know. Bad sign:-)

The people in South Ossetia are more aligned to the People of North Ossetia, which is in Russia.  The people of S.O. have been trying to break away from the country on Georgia, but the govt. there is not having it.  It sent in troops to quell the violence in the breakaway region, and pissed off the Russians who have peacekeepers in the area.  Russia, who probably had a plan on standby to invade Georgia, now had a reason.  They were "protecting" the people of S.O.  Georgia messed up by over playing their hand against a neighbor that is militarily superior to them in a region where people don't like them.  I feel bad the Russians are moving in Georgia "proper" now, but in a way they provoked this.

Only in the latest incident.  A truce was in effect since the late 90s with Russians in S. Ossetia as peacekeepers.  Georgia tried to assert their control on their little province and Russia has vowed to support the separatist movement.

The russians are pure evil. They hate every thing what is nice in this world. They are trying to claw back the Soviet union. Georgia was trying to make a region better give the people a better life. Russia want to destroy them for that. Russia needs to be stripped of its weapons and army, it is a danger to the human race they want to nuke every country what has freedom and kill people who can enjoy themselves. They would have taken over Georgia and put it under the russian communists. Russia has lost what little respect Great Britain had for it and the rest of the free world.Russia want to nuke every one and destroy the the earth. We are now facing a new age of war and evil. The Earth will survive and start new life. But can the human race survive nukes from russia?

The area that Georgia invaded has been a source of dispute between the two countries for many years.  Some 80 percent of the people there have russian passports, but Georgia has claimed it is part of Georgia.  They have been at an impass for several years until Georgia sent its troops and then Russia responded.
