Someone help me understand the beer-goggles effect?

Ok so I really hate beer. I don't understand how this whole beer goggles effect thing works, I thought when your drunk you just can't see properly?

Or do you start hallucinating ugly people as being attractive?

I know a guy that usually has to get drunk before he has s*x with his overweight gf. Is it because of the beer goggles effect?

Alcohol lowers your inhibitions. A side effect of this is that your standards also go down.

Beer goggle effect is just a joke people say when a someone is ugly while they are sober and then when drunk is no longer that bad looking. It doesn't have to be beer. any alcohol can do this. it's called getting drunk and have poor moral standards.

It has nothing to do with your vision, it's a matter of lowering inhibition.  Alcohol can take those "I would never!" items and turn them into, "Hey, why not?"
