  1. The insurance company has to wait for the fire marshall report.  It can take up to a couple months, while they're investigating.

His agent should have explained that to him.

  2. If you feel the insurance company is dragging their feet or are nonresponsive, have your boyfriend call his agent to intervene. That is what they are there for.  Now, with regard to the cause, the fire marshall should be investigating, as far as I know, they investigate all fires to determine the cause.  Call (or have your boyfriend do it since it was his house) the Fire dept that responded & speak to the fire marshall (or whatever your town calls the person who does the investigating).  Get a copy of the report, call the insurance company & forward it.  It may take a while for the report, it is possible it is not done yet.  The insurance company may be waiting for the report & the fire marshall may not know who the company is.  Once they have this, they should start moving on the claim.  They should be able to send some loss of use money & some money so he can buy some clothes & other necessities.  His agent may have draft authority & may be able to issue a check for some money for this.  They would of course have to have it approved by the company, but this is normally quicker than waiting for the company to MAIL something.

  3. Why are you wanting the insurance company to call you back.  Are you wanting to know how the fire started?  How much the estimate was?  Has the claim been set up?  Can we get paid for out of pocket living expense?

What are you wanting to know from them.  Most of them take a while and with the current storm situations around the country, most adjusters are back logged either directly dealing with the storms or their respective insurance companies have sent some of their co-workers off creating additional work load for them at home.  Now, that does not excuse the adjuster for not calling you back and saying sorry for the delay.  Call your agent first and have your agent make headway for you.  That is why you pay your premium to him is for his assistance on something like this.

  4. I'm assuming that your boyfriend owned the home, and not rented.(If rented I hope he had renters insurance).  It should not matter what happened they should still start the claim and have the home "protected", meaning if there is anything still standing it should be boarded up, if not the site should be secured. 3 weeks is a long time for nothing to have happened. Depending on your coverage they should at least have some type of clean up going on/ and no matter what coverage you have someone should have contacted you.   You always have the right to contact the Insurance Department of your state and file a report.

  5. have your boyfriend call his agent and get him to help.  if he wrote the policy directly through the company he will have to just keep calling the adjuster until he gets through. (this is why its ALWAYS good to have a local agent)  they are doing an investigation, trust me.  its takes awhile to settle a major claim like this, so be patient and keep your cool with the adjuster.

  6. I find it hard to believe no one will call you back. I'd call twice a day (or more) everyday. If you speak to someone, demand to speak to an adjuster. Ask to speak to the supervisor if necessary. Or, call your agent. They should jump in to help.

  7. It takes time to settle a major insurance claim.  Three weeks is nothing.
